Measuring Volume with Various Glassware

1.1 MISCONCEPTION
Misconception always happen when pupils compare two objects according to the height of the object. In this volume of liquid topic, the pupils may have misconception on capacity. Many children have very little idea on capacity. Pupils often make comparison on height rather than on capacity. When asked which holds more, the tall container or the short container, many pupils will choose the taller container. So, it is important for teachers to teach capacity by using direct comparison using non-standard measurement units and standard measurement units for volume of liquids.

1.2 TEACHING AIDS
Teaching aid plays an important role in teaching and learning activities. It helps the teacher and her pupils to understand the lesson easily. It’s also help teacher to teach pupils in effective ways about the topic. As a teacher must be very concern about her teaching activities and teaching aids. It is to make sure that teacher achieves her learning objectives and her pupils understand what teacher had taught them. Teaching Year Two children is not an easy task. As a teacher must be well prepared before entering the class.
2.1 TEACHING AID FOR COMPARE THE VOLUMES OF LIQUIDS BY DIRECT  COMPARISON BY USING NON-STANDARD UNITS
Comparing the volume of liquid by direct comparison is not an easy topic to teach the Year Two pupils espeacilly to the lower achievers. They often make mistake when identifying the capacity of two different containers. This is because they confuse on height rather than its capacity. So, I decided to create teaching aids that really suits them and will help them to understand better the idea of capacity. For this, I would like to use some real things that can be found in the home. Such as:-

Tupperware

Polystyrene Cup

Fish Bowl

Vase

Bottle

Jug

Pail
2.2       TEACHING AID FOR MEASURE VOLUMES OF LIQUIDS USING UNIFORM NON-STANDARD UNITS.

To teach measuring volumes of liquids using uniform non-standard units for high achievers, a teacher can use many type of teaching aid. So, I decided to create teaching aids that really suits them and will help them to generate creative and critical thinking.
For this, I decide to use word problem cards and let them read it. Here the pupils need to understand the problem. Then, they will divise a plan on how to measure the volume of an apple juice in the containers. After that, they need to carry out the plan which is measuring the volume of apple juice in the containers using glasses. Finally, pupils need to record their findings in the table given.
For this, I would like to use some real things that can be found in the home and school. Such as:-

A Bottle of Apple Juice

A Jug of Apple Juice

A Pack of Apple Juice

Glass

Container

These things also can be found easily. Most of the pupils have seen these things in their daily life. Teaching and learning activities will be interesting when use word cards to find volume of liquid. This will encourage high achiever pupils to involve actively in the activities. This teaching aid is suitable for all type of students and very economical because it is cheap and easily found in supermarket.

3.0       TEACHING ACTIVITIES
3.1       ACTIVITY 1 (For Lower Achievers)
Topic                            :           Volumes of Liquid
Learning Area              :           Measure and comparing volumes of liquid
Learning Objectives     :           Measure and compare volumes of liquids by direct comparisons and
Using uniform non-standard units
Learning Outcome        :           At the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to:-
Measure and Compare the volumes of liquids by using non-standard
                                                units correctly.
Moral Value                  :         Cooperating
Teaching Aids               :         Tupperware, Vase, Bottle, Fish Bowl, Jug, Polystyrene Cup
                                                A pail of Colour Water
Teaching and Learning Procedures
1.      Teacher display the video clip and ask pupils to view how to measure volume.
2.      Divide the pupils into group of four to do work in their cooperative learning.
3.      Appoint one pupils  to be the recorder in the group.
4.      Give each group 5 set of container of different sizes, a pail of colour water and polystrin cup as the measurement tools.
5.      Teacher asks pupils which container can hold more water.
6.      Teacher introduces the vocabulary ( more and less)

7.      Each group will record the number of polystrin cup needed to fill the water in every containers into the table given.

8.      Teacher have a discussion on the result found by pupils.
9.      Pupils answer the questions by orally
Ä     Which container has the more volume of water?
Ä     Which container has the less volume of water?
10.      Pupils answer the worksheet provide by teacher,

From this activities pupils will be bear in mind that the volume of liquid will be determined based on the capacity of containers used. The bigger containers the more quntities of water is needed to full fill. Teacher emphasizes to pupils that the height is not hold more volume of liquids. Pupils must watch out the capacity of the liquid of the container.

3.2       ACTIVITY 2  (For Higher Achievers)
Topic                             : Volumes of Liquid
Learning Objectives      : Measure and compare volumes of liquids by direct comparison and using                                             uniform non-standard units.

Learning Outcome        : At the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to:-
Measure and Compare the volumes of liquids by using non-standard
                                                units correctly.

Moral Value                 : Being systematic and accurate in measuring volume of liquid
Teaching Aids               : Flash card, A bottle of apple juice, A jug of apple juice, A pack of apple
                                        juice, Three containers and Glasses.
Teaching and Learning Procedures
1.      Divide pupils into group of three and have them work in their group.
2.      Appoint one pupil in the group to be the recorder.
3.      Teacher shuffle the envelopes of word problem cards.
4.      Ask a leader of group come forward and choose an envelope.
5.      Pupils collect the detail from the word problem cards and ask them to estimate the number of glasses need to contain in the apple juice.
6.      Give each group a set of learning resources.
7.       Each group will measure using glass according word problem cards.
8.      Pupils record their findings in the table given.
9.      Teacher have a discussion on the result found by pupils.
10.       Pupils write their results in the form of statement as shown:-
1a.  Which container have more glasses of juice?
                  -------------------------
1b.  How many glasses there are?
                  -------------glasses
2a. Which container have less glasses of juice?
                  ---------------------------
2b.  How many glasses there are?
                  -------------glasses

11.      Teacher will give rewards to the group who answer correctly.
12.      Pupils answer the worksheet given by the teacher.
Conclusion

For this activity, pupils will be remembered in mind that the volume of liquids will be determined based on the capacity of containers used. The bigger container contains more glassess of water. Therefore, teacher will be emphasized to pupils that the height is not holds more volume of liquids but the capacity of the cotainers hold more volume of liquids.
